The High Numbers was the first name used by the British band The Who in the early sixties. The name was a reference to the T-shirts with numbers that the mods (a popular youth movement in Britain) used at the time. The band had the same line-up as The Who did: Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon. "The Who", a name suggested by a friend of Pete's named Richard Barnes (they were formerly known as The Detours), was briefly changed to "The High Numbers" when they were discovered by Pete Meaden, who wanted to make them famous as a Mod band and became their manager.
