Though primarily in use as the Dutch word for the male reproductive organ, in this case 'Lul' allegedly is an acronym for Lui Uit Leeuwarden (Lads From Leeuwarden). Lul is formed in 1987 when Sytse van Essen and Fritz de Jong, also active in It Dockumer Lokaeltsje, team up with Empee Holwerda and Klaas Schippers. A year later, when the band decides to move to Amsterdam, Van Essen opts to stay behind, and the band goes on as a three-piece. Their music is a frenetic, rhythmically complex, amalgam of influences like early Wire, This Heat and hardcore punk.
