Tânia Maria was born in São Luís do Maranhão, Brazil in 1948. She is considered to have a perfect notion of rhythm and balance of music combining an original blend of Brazilian music with jazz and funk. She moved to Paris in 1974 and then to New York in 1981, returning to Paris again after some years. Compared to the rest of the world (especially in the States and Europe), she is not well recognised in her homeland.
