Uncle Tupelo was an alternative country band which formed in Belleville, Illinois, United States in 1987. The band was formed by high school friends Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweedy and Mike Heidorn and released four full-length albums before disbanding in 1994. After the split, Tweedy formed the band Wilco, while Farrar formed Son Volt. Wheras Son Volt has mostly continued on the same sonic trajectory as Uncle Tupelo, Wilco has shifted their sound towards alternative and indie rock and have become one of the most critically acclaimed alternative rock bands of the past two decades.
