Brownie McGhee was born Walter McGhee in Knoxville, TN, November 30, 1915. He grew up on a small, family run farm near Kingsport , TN, learning a love for music at the hands of his father, a local singer-guitarist who used to play at dances and parties, often bringing his young son with him. Brownie was stricken with polio at the age of four, from which he fully recovered, with the exception of a noticeable limp that affected him all his life.
