Prior to the 2003 indie rock side-project with Doug Gillard and Robert Pollard the Lifeguards was a band name used for a 1959 ABC-Paramount 45 single "Everybody Out'ta The Pool". The players on this collectible single included members of Bill Haley and the Comets, such as Al Rappa (bass guitar); Ralph Jones (drums); and Rudy Pompilli (tenor saxophone). The latter day Lifeguards put out a 2003 album, 'Mist King Urth' that was recorded while both Pollard and Gillard were members of Guided by Voices, with Gillard providing all instrumentation and Pollard the vocals.
