The Boyoyo Boys are a four-piece band from Soweto, South Africa. Formed in 1969, they are among the founders of mbaqanga or township jive, the music of shebeens (illegal drinking halls) in the country's impoverished townships. Mbaqanga music blends jazz and African musical traditions. The group performs on acoustic guitar, upright bass, and drums, with a sax or penny whistle playing the melody. The Boyoyo Boys have 20 gold records in South Africa.
