Smaller were a band of lads from Liverpool, led by songwriter Peter "Digsy" Deary. They were friends with Oasis and often supported them on tour. Digsy was commemorated in song by Noel Gallagher with the Oasis song Digsy's Dinner, and Noel is credited with additional guitar on Smaller's 1996 debut album Badly Badly and single Is. Their sound was quite similar to Oasis circa Definitely Maybe, but in contrast to the Gallaghers' expansive, escapist songwriting, Smaller detailed the reality of life on the dole in a Northern city with a typically dry Scouse wit and self-deprecation.
