Greyhaven began in late 1996 when Ethan Matthews and Nate Howard began meeting and doing some very basic songwriting on guitars. A few weeks later, Nate brought in his friend and bandmate, Nick Cipriano to add drums to the mix. The trio then began some serious jamming and songwriting sessions and took on the name "Greyhaven", which is an alteration of “The Grey Havens” from the famous Tolkien trilogy.
