An exciting but obscure jazz saxophonist who has spent most of his adult life in Washington, D.C., Byron Morris is the son of the late saxman/band leader James William "Jim Billy" Morris (b. Feb. 18, 1916, d. Feb. 8, 1985) and has led or co-led the band Unity since the 1970s. The alto, tenor and soprano saxophonist was born and raised in Roanoke, VA, where as a high school student, he played alongside pianist Don Pullen in a band called the Junior Aristocrats (which was named after the Aristocrats, a swing band his father led from 1947-1960).
