Joe Wilder was born in 1922. Wilder studied classical music, but became widely know as a jazz trumpeter with a number of orchestras in the 1940s and '50s, including Jimmie Lunceford, Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie. He later recorded as a soloist for Savoy and Columbia. In 2008 he was recognized by as one of the NEA Jazz Masters.
