Catalan tenor Jaume Aragall y Garriga (also known by the Italianized version of his name, Giacomo) was born in Barcelona, Spain on June 6, 1939. When he was 9 he joined the choir of the church of Santa María del Mar in Barcelona and at the age of 19 he began studying voice with Jaime Francisco Puig (who later also taught Jose Carreras). In the 1961-62 season he made his professional debut at the Liceo of Barcelona in the roles of Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor (January) and Arlequino in Pagliacci. Shortly after he took 2nd prize in an international singing contest in Bilbao, Spain.
