King Pleasure (March 24, 1922 - March 21, 1981) was a jazz vocalist and the inovator of the style, coined, vocalese. This pioneering inovation consisted of his writing lyrics to popular jazz instrumentals. Born Clarence Beeks in Oakdale, Tennessee, he moved to New York City in the mid-1940s and was always a fan of bebop music. King Pleasure first achieved popularity by winning a talent show at the Apollo Theater in NY with the vocalese classic "Moody's Mood for Love," a James Moody saxophone solo, "I'm in the Mood for Love" to which he wrote the lyrics.
